Your Excellence is Sabotaging Your Genius
How operating in your zone unlocks authentic confidence, growth and mastery!
Most people build their careers - and their businesses - around what they’re good at.
It’s practical, responsible, and often rewarded.
And it’s also one of the most reliable ways to slowly drain your energy, dull your creativity, and quietly resent the very success you worked so hard to achieve.
That’s because being excellent is not the same thing as operating in your Genius Zone.
And confusing the two has consequences.
Your Genius Zone (and why it matters)
The concept of the Genius Zone comes from Dr. Gay Hendricks, who observed that most people operate in one of four zones:
Zone of Incompetence - what you’re bad at
Zone of Competence - what you can do, but so can many others
Zone of Excellence - what you’re very good at and recognized for
Zone of Genius - what you’re uniquely designed to do
The trap isn’t incompetence.
The trap is excellence.
Because when you’re excellent at something, the world rewards you for it - even if it slowly costs you your vitality.
The Zone of Excellence Trap
The Zone of Excellence is seductive.
It sounds like:
I’m good at this.
People rely on me.
I’ve invested too much to stop now.
It would be irresponsible to walk away.
And often, it looks successful, but inside, something feels off.
When you’re living outside your Genius Zone, you experience:
Chronic Frustration & Burnout -Tasks feel heavy, draining, or obligatory. You may be competent, even excellent - but the energy cost is HIGH, and over time, this leads to exhaustion, resentment and sometimes…
Self-Sabotage → you unconsciously create chaos, distractions, or reasons to stay small, because deep down, success in a false zone doesn’t feel safe or satisfying.
Underperformance Despite Effort - You work harder but feel like you’re treading water - because when you’re not operating in your natural brilliance, your results don’t reflect your potential.
Imposter Syndrome & Comparison - When you live outside your genius you often compare yourself to those thriving in their zone, which makes you question your worth or feeling ‘behind’ in life.
Lack of Fulfillment or Joy - Even with success, something is missing. You might check the boxes of what ‘should’ be satisfying, but you still feel spiritually or emotionally empty.
Invisibility or Misalignment in Your Impact - When you’re not showing up in your zone others can’t fully see you. Your presence feels off, your voice dimmed, and your message unclear.
This isn’t burnout from overwork - it’s misplacement.
Being Set Free
For most of my career I was caged by my own excellence.
I was a strong executor. A systems thinker. Reliable under pressure.
I could manage complexity, lead projects, and deliver results, and people trusted me because of it.
That competence came with validation, responsibility, and compensation, so I figured this was what ‘success’ looked like.
But something always felt off.
I wasn’t exhausted because I couldn’t do the work, I was exhausted because I was performing - executing other people’s plans, carrying other people’s priorities, and using my skills in ways that never came close to touching my highest values.
I thought the tension meant I needed to push harder or be more grateful.
What I didn’t realize yet was that I wasn’t failing… I was misaligned.
Everything changed when I went through the Genius Zone work and saw it reflected back to me clearly, especially as it connected to my priorities.
For the first time, I could see how my purpose actually wanted to be expressed.
Not just what I was good at… but how I was meant to contribute.
My Genius Zone came into focus like this:
I’m a strategist, systems thinker, and purpose-driven mentor who helps people get clear, stay focused, and take aligned action.
Whether I’m working with individuals or teams, I bring structure, wisdom, and practical plans that empower people to show up as their best selves - internally aligned and mission-focused.
Seeing my strengths articulated this way was electric.
It wasn’t about leaving my skills behind, it was about redeploying them in service of my highest priority.
Instead of executing plans that didn’t belong to me, I could now build and steward something that did.
That shift created a level of excitement, focus, and internal drive I had never experienced before, because for the first time, my work wasn’t just productive,
It was purposeful, and once I gained that clarity, it became impossible to go back!
What the Genius Zone Actually Is (according to Hendricks)
The Genius Zone doesn’t just help you avoid burnout, it reframes contribution from performance to stewardship.
Your Genius Zone is not:
what you’ve been trained to do
what you’re praised for
what pays well
or what you can force yourself to sustain
Your Genius Zone is:
what you feel called toward again and again
what energizes you rather than drains you
what feels like an authentic expression of who you are
where creativity, service, and joy intersect
When you’re in your Genius Zone you unlock:
Natural Energy, Joy & Ease - Work feels like worship. You’re energized, focused, and alive. You do what you love, and it often doesn’t feel like ‘work’ at all.
Effortless Excellence & Mastery - Your genius feels intuitive. You get results with grace because you’re operating from your God-given design, NOT forcing unnatural effort.
Magnetism & Influence - When you show up in your genius, people feel it. You become more visible, compelling, and trusted, because authenticity resonates deeply with everyone.
Deep Spiritual Fulfillment - You sense you’re doing what you were created for. There’s a divine satisfaction in knowing you’re using your gifts in service to others.
Accelerated Growth & Opportunities - Doors open. Alignment attracts alignment. The more time you spend in your genius, the more you’re trusted, invited, and expanded.
Unshakable Confidence & Peace - You stop striving to ‘prove’ anything. Your worth is anchored. You trust that your zone of genius is sacred and fully enough.
This is where your work stops costing you your life force - and starts giving it back!
Why So Many High Performers Never Find Their Genius Zone
Most people don’t miss their Genius Zone because they lack talent, they miss it because they were trained to optimize for security, ROI, approval, and practicality.
Especially high-capacity people.
If you’re capable, disciplined, and intelligent, you can succeed almost anywhere - which makes it harder to notice when you’re succeeding in the wrong place.
So you:
double down on what you’re good at
confuse responsibility with calling
and use discipline to compensate for misalignment
Until one day, the cost becomes too high.
Where Priorities Come In
Inside the PURPOSE™ Framework, the integration between your true priorities and your Genius Zone matters - and this is where many frameworks either get sloppy, or don’t address these areas at all.
The very first step of the framework - Pinpoint Your Intrinsic Drivers, focuses on your ranked list of subconscious priorities first - to clear the noise so your genius can be accurately identified.
Your subconscious priorities helps you:
identify where your energy actually goes
recognize patterns of motivation and resistance
see why certain roles or responsibilities feel heavy
and stop judging yourself for not thriving where you ‘should’
This clarity creates the conditions necessary for Genius Zone work to be honest instead of aspirational.
Without clarity on your true priorities, people often mistake:
excellence for genius
obligation for calling
productivity for purpose
Because you can’t identify your genius while still performing someone else’s priorities.
But when your work aligns with both your priorities and your genius zone, your impact becomes authentic, durable, and deeply fulfilling.
You were given your unique gifts on purpose.
You were shaped through experience for a reason.
And you’re not called to exhaust yourself proving your worth.
You’re called to serve from who you actually are, and THAT changes everything!

Thanks for the restack @Joe Robinson!
This hit home - that was my challenge for much of my career in science. When one has a broad zone of excellence it can be hard to really discern ones zone of genius.
It took a few major life lessons, as well as years of self development before I recognised what was happening in my life and decided to pursue my zone of genius. It was surprisingly simple once I asked myself the right questions.
