The Subconscious Patterns Keeping You Spiritually Stuck
The patterns causing your emotional reactions and relational tension don’t come from a lack of faith - they're a survival mechanism, and until they're healed, they’ll keep hijacking your calling.
Your brain’s survival mode may be sabotaging your calling.
You can love God, want to grow, and pray for change…
And still feel stuck.
Not because you’re disobedient, or lack faith.
And you’re not ‘doing it wrong.’
A part of your brain is still operating as if you’re under threat - even when you’re not.
This is one of the most misunderstood tensions in the faith journey: the gap between what you desire spiritually and how you keep reacting emotionally.
If you’ve ever wondered why:
You keep repeating the same relational patterns
Certain conversations trigger outsized reactions
You know the truth but still struggle to live according to it
This isn’t a character flaw.
It’s a subconscious pattern.
Survival Mode Isn’t Sin - But It Is Self-Sabotage
Your brain was designed to protect you.
When it perceives danger - emotional, relational, or psychological - it shifts into survival mode. That’s where patterns like defensiveness, people-pleasing, withdrawal, control, or over-functioning are born.
The problem?
Your brain doesn’t distinguish between real danger and perceived threat.
So past wounds…
Old stories…
Unresolved emotional charges…
They quietly shape your reactions long after the original moment has passed.
This is why you can genuinely want to respond with love - and still snap.
Why you can value peace - and still brace for conflict.
Why you can feel called to more - and still self-sabotage when you get close.
Paul captured this tension perfectly:
‘I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do-this I keep on doing.’ (Romans 7:19)
That’s not rebellion.
That’s survival mode running the show.
The Neuroscience Behind Renewing Your Mind
Scripture tells us to ‘be transformed by the renewing of your mind,’
But most of us were never taught how that actually works.
From a neuroscience perspective, your subconscious mind stores emotional memories and meaning.
Every intense experience creates a story about yourself - others & what’s safe.
Over time, those stories become automatic filters.
So when a situation resembles the past - even faintly - your nervous system reacts before your conscious faith can engage.
That’s why willpower fails.
That’s why ‘trying harder’ doesn’t bring freedom.
Renewal doesn’t happen by suppressing reactions.
It happens by resolving the emotional charge beneath them.
When perception shifts, behavior follows.
How Subconscious Patterns Show Up Spiritually
Most people don’t call this ‘being spiritually stuck.’
Instead they call it:
Self-sabotage
Emotional reactivity
Relational tension
Chronic frustration
Quiet resentment
But underneath?
It’s often the same root:
Unexamined beliefs formed in survival mode.
Beliefs like:
I’m responsible for everyone else’s emotions.
If I slow down, everything will fall apart.
If I speak honestly, I’ll be rejected.
These beliefs don’t feel like lies…
They feel like wisdom - because at one point, they kept you safe,
But what once protected you can now imprison you.
Faith Isn’t Meant to Override Your Nervous System
This is where so much well-meaning spiritual advice misses the mark.
Faith was never designed to bypass your humanity,
It was designed to redeem it.
Jesus didn’t shame people out of patterns…
He healed what was underneath.
Renewal happens when truth meets awareness,
When grace meets honesty,
And when you stop asking: “What’s wrong with me?”
And start asking: “What belief is shaping this reaction?”
That’s the doorway to freedom.
Where Healing Actually Begins
Deep pattern work - the kind that dissolves emotional charges at the root - is the heart of my the one on one work I do with people.
But every healing journey starts earlier than that.
It starts with clarity.
When you understand:
Your actual priorities - based on the evidence in your behavior
Where your genius lives
Which beliefs are running quietly in the background
You stop mislabeling survival as sin.
You stop shaming yourself for reactions you haven’t yet learned how to heal.
That’s why Pinpointing Your Intrinsic Drivers is always the first step and it’s included with every one on one session.
You’re Not Failing - You’re Being Invited Deeper
If you’ve felt stuck, reactive, or quietly frustrated with yourself lately, hear this clearly:
Your brain isn’t broken.
Your faith isn’t weak.
You’re just being invited out of survival mode - and into alignment.
That invitation starts with awareness, compassion,
And with the courage (and humility) to look beneath the behavior and listen to what your reactions are trying to protect.
Clarity opens the door.
Prayer keeps you grounded in the truth and redeeming power of God’s love.
Healing walks you through it.
And freedom comes when your mind, heart, and faith finally work together.
This isn’t about fixing yourself.
It’s about renewing what was never meant to carry the weight alone, and you can start your journey towards clarity with the FREE Core Priorities Snapshot - a guided introduction to uncovering the subconscious priorities already shaping your life.
